What does high blood pressure mean?

It is estimated that about one-fifth of all Danes are affected by high blood pressure. One-third of this group is unaware of it. Symptoms of high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can manifest as headaches, vision problems, palpitations, and shortness of breath, and are a contributing factor to blood clots. The condition arises when the heart has to work harder than usual to pump blood through the body. The causes of high blood pressure can vary from person to person and may be hereditary. A person’s blood pressure is measured in two numbers: the systolic blood pressure (the peak pressure in an artery when the heart contracts) and the diastolic blood pressure (the lowest pressure between heartbeats).

How do I find out my blood pressure?

Of course, you can visit your doctor if you want to know your blood pressure. There are no strictly defined limits, as many factors can influence your blood pressure. If you are particularly anxious about the result of the measurement, this alone can temporarily increase your blood pressure. It is estimated that people between the ages of 18 and 80 should have a normal blood pressure of 120-135/70-85 mmHg, which means millimeters of mercury. Mercury was historically used for various scientific measurements because the liquid expands predictably with temperature or pressure changes. Your blood pressure will naturally rise with age and does not necessarily lead to further discomfort.

You can also measure your blood pressure at home with a blood pressure monitor. Sit comfortably and place your arm on the table. Sit still with both feet on the ground and be sure not to roll your sleeves too tightly, as this can affect the measurement. Also, make sure you haven’t smoked 30 minutes before the measurement. The cuff should be placed just above the elbow on your upper arm. It should tighten a little when inflated, but not so much that it hurts. You should be able to fit a finger between the cuff and your arm. Be sure to measure before breakfast and dinner. It’s best if you’ve relaxed for 10 minutes before measuring.

What lowers blood pressure?

Diet, exercise, and sleep have a significant impact on your blood pressure. Be sure to eat a balanced diet according to health authority guidelines and meet your fish oil needs. You should aim for at least half an hour of exercise each day. Recent research has shown a link between sleep deprivation and high blood pressure. A normal night’s sleep means you get between seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Good sleep habits also help reduce stress, which is also considered a factor contributing to high blood pressure.

Alternative treatments

Sauna visits have been known for their beneficial effects on the body and mind for thousands of years. The modern version of sauna therapy, such as with a sauna blanket, increases the production of nitric oxide in the body. This is a signaling molecule for red blood cells that helps relax your arteries and, therefore, helps prevent blood clots. Additionally, you will experience the same sense of well-being in the body as with traditional sauna therapy, and you can start and finish the treatment quickly and easily according to your own needs.
